Life on the Swingset - SS 281: Finding and Being Community Role Models w/Kevin Patterson - March 22, 2017

There is a sort of order from chaos that happens when like minded people discover others like themselves. Individuals become clusters, clusters become groups, and with groups come unavoidable growing pains, issues, conflict, and struggle. Still, there's a certain magic that comes from having a group of diverse and motivated people with a common role come together to build something, because when you get it right, you end up with a community. Community role models are essential and tonight, Kevin Patterson joins Cooper, Dylan, Dirty Lola, and Mike Joseph to discuss poly role models and the joys and struggles involved with building sex positive community.

Sex With Timaree - Ep309: What Kind of Person is Poly? A Conversation with Kevin Patterson - December 20, 2017

Most media depictions of polyamory are really limited. TV shows and newspaper articles tend to feature white, middle to upper class, conventionally cute, cisgender people who are now in a triad, after years of monogamy. The guys are straight, the women are bisexual. There are few examples for healthy poly relationships in general, especially ones that depict the great variety of folks engaging in consensual non-monogamy.

Enter: Kevin Patterson.

He’s been running the blog Poly Role Models for a few years now and he and his wife have been on our show before to talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of open relationships. He’s been traveling the nation speaking about his personal experiences and what he’s learned from others… and now he has a book. It’ll be available in March but you can pre-order it now.

We had a blast chatting- we talk representations of non-monogamy in media (including She’s Gotta Have It), myths and truths about sustaining multiple loving relationships, the utility of trigger warnings, how to relate to metamours and much, much more.
